Originally used as survival during the winter months, Scandinavians created ice skates from leather straps and animal bones for a more effective way of traveling throughout the winter season. Today, skates are made from leather, nylon, and other synthetic materials.
With cold temperatures moving in, it’s time to lace up a pair of skates and find the best rinks near our Jessup apartments. Nearby rinks include:
Piney Orchard Ice Arena
Once the practice facility for the Washington Nationals, Piney Orchard is one of the area’s premier skating destinations. Just an 18-minute drive from our community, it offers public skate sessions, a Learn to Skate program, and an adult hockey league.
The Learn to Skate classes welcome all ages. They strive to instill a lifelong passion for skating and are a fun way to exercise while learning new skills. Students also receive seven complimentary passes for public skate sessions.
The Gardens Ice House
Located 19 minutes from the community, Gardens Ice House is “where skating is always in season.” Found in Fairland Regional Park, it’s the largest facility of its type in the Mid-Atlantic region. Skaters can use three rinks and retractable walls for a pond skating atmosphere. Open sessions welcome visitors throughout the week, and costs $7.70 for adults plus skate rentals.
Adult hockey players can also join the country’s eighth-largest league to play pick-up games.
Wheaton Ice Arena
Worth a 33-minute trip, the Wheaton Ice Arena features an NHL-size rink and a pro shop stocked with everything you need for fun on the ice. Public sessions are held several times a week with select cheapskate dates for discounted skating fees.
For more experienced skaters, the rink also offers freestyle and ice dance sessions, as well as pick-up hockey.
