If you would like to enjoy a fun journey back in time, visit Baltimore’s fascinating historical sites. These historical sites are an easy drive from our Jessup apartments, and you can explore everything from lighthouses to famous mansions. A few of the sites you don’t want to miss include:

The Mencken House

Known as the “Sage of Baltimore,” Henry Louis Mencken was a literary great who wrote for the Baltimore Evening Sun. He lived in the three-story row house at 1524 Hollins Street until his death in 1956 at 76. Constructed in the Italianate style in 1883, the home was built by local builder Jacob Saum. Now restored and refurbished, it highlights how a wealthy family lived during the late 19th and 20th centuries. You’ll see some of the original artifacts and furnishings, and the home is shown today as it appeared in 1940. The Mencken House is currently open on Saturdays. You can visit between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. by appointment.

Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse

Climb to the top of the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse to enjoy picturesque views of the Baltimore Harbor. Built in 1856, it’s one of the oldest Chesapeake lighthouses still standing. As you explore, you’ll discover more about Seven Foot Knoll and other lighthouses from across the region. You’ll also learn about navigational instruments and see the bell from the SS Danville.

Star-Spangled Banner Flag House

Nestled on E. Pratt Street, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House is where Mary Pickersgill and her family called home. She started a flag-making business and was later asked to sew two flags for Fort McHenry. The following year, her 30×42-foot garrison flag waving over the victorious fort inspired Francis Scott Key to write the lyrics to what would become the U.S. national anthem.
