Enjoy a Meal at One of the Country’s Oldest Public Markets

food market

Do you want to enjoy a meal in a historic setting?

If so, head to the Cross Street Market

Just 21 minutes from our apartments in Jessup, MD, it’s one of the oldest public markets in the United States.

Cross Street opened in 1846 and was destroyed by a twelve-alarm fire over a century later.

The market was rebuilt in 1952, and today it’s a local and regional destination for food and drink. There are 22 independently owned and operated businesses, with highlights including:

Royal Farms Chicken

Royal Farms has served its world-famous chicken since 1959. Based in Baltimore, it strives to be the quick and friendly restaurant of choice. The chicken is never frozen, and it’s lightly breaded before being pressure cooked. The chefs start their day early as they also hand-cut the fries and brew 100 percent Colombian coffee. Offerings include chicken tenders, chicken sliders, and bacon jalapeno cheese dogs.

Gangster Vegan Organics

Gangster Vegan Organics will open by the end of August. Its mission is to encourage people to eat healthier, and to be kind to the earth. All of the ingredients are 100 percent organic and gluten-free. Choices include beet burgers, burrito bowls, and Kalefornia Love salads. They pair well with juices such as Redman and The Blueprint.

Ono Poke

Ono is Baltimore’s original poke shop. The restaurant opened in 2017, and its motto is “Aloha Served Daily. It was inspired by the owner’s trip to Honolulu, and only uses to-go containers and utensils that are made with recyclable materials. Poke is also called surfer sashimi, and the cooks make the dishes with fresh fish. Bowls include Lomi Lomi, Chili Garlic, and Smooth-n-spicy.
